blue는 하늘의 비유적으로 표현한다.

그러니까 난데없이 하늘에서 떨어지는 뭔가를 상상해보자.

 

즉, out of the blue는 예상치 못하게 갑자기 일어나는 일을 의미하는 표현이다.

*thin air은 아무것도 없는 곳을 의미한다. 허공에서 나타나는 것만큼 예상치 못한 일을 없겠지!

 

suddenly 역시 예상치 못한 일이 갑자기 일어날 때 자주 사용하는 부사지만, 좀 더 예상치 못한 일, 더 갑작스러운 일을 강조할 때는 ‘out of the blue’ 표현이 더 적절하다.
